On the night of the Sex Magazine Issue #7 launch party, DJ Lucas drove from Amherst, Massachusetts to play for 300+ people at China Chalet alongside DJURGUD and Snill. I had met DJ Lucas earlier that summer at an all-ages show Snill was playing: A recent high school graduate he runs a label called Darkworld that put out music ranging from Black Metal, Indy Rock and Hip Hop with almost a new single or video released every week. DJ Lucas seems to be involved in every project, while constantly releasing his own beats as well.
I was introduced to DJURGUD as one of the key visual contributors for NYC rap trio Ratking, who we had interviewed in Sex Issue #5. DJURGUD had directed their music video 100 and made the album art for the forthcoming LP So It Goes. When I asked Ratking's Sporting Life who he thought was a good DJ, he had recommended DJURGUD.
For the Launch party, DJURGUD ended up bringing a lot of friends including Ratking who took turns MCing during his set. When DJ Lucas began, this continued with Princess Nokia & Wiki swapping microphones over some of DJ Lucas's best tracks to date. Knowing all three as some of my favorite artists, this rare combination was a pretty cool thing to watch unfold.
It's moments like this that remind me of why publishing a magazine like Sex is definitely something worth celebrating, and makes me grateful for all the inspiring creative people who make it happen.
