Cash from Chaos / Unicorns & Rainbows
Video Selection by Maggie Lee
Between 1995 and 1997 artists Alex Bag and Patterson Beckwith held a weekly late-night television show on New York City’s public access channel, originally titled Cash From Chaos, and later Unicorns & Rainbows. The program was essentially a variety show shot, directed, starring and hosted by the artists themselves. Rather than creating video that strived for the timelessness of art, Bag and Beckwith submitted to the rhythyms of cable television, filling their weekly 29 minute timeslot with interviews, found television, pranks, home-made music videos, advertisements and skits. Using the irreverent vernacular of MTV in the context of still gritty downtown New York this raw, hilarious, and often shocking footage is a rare example of how fun DIY television can be.
Over two years the artists broadcast more than eighty hours of original footage. Below we present a small selection of clips from the show selected by Maggie Lee. Sex Magazine would like to thank Team Gallery & Alex Bag for sharing this footage with us.
